Where Were You on 9/11?

Absentminded, preoccupied, forgetful, and distracted are all adjectives used to describe me by various friends and family members through the years due to the fact I simply don’t remember things.
My brothers will bring up incidents that happened when we were children and are shocked that my memory of these same events is virtually non-existent.
Everything in life is relative. No matter how absentminded or brain dead we may be, I don’t think any of us will ever forget the events that unfolded before our eyes on September 11, 2001. I remember that day as if it was yesterday. My brother called, told me to turn on the TV and that’s where I sat – mesmerized for more hours, and days, than I can count.
We recently acknowledged the 10th anniversary of 9/11 and I think many of us felt it was time to put the past behind us. We had mourned the events of 9/11 for 10 years and the time had come for us to move forward. That didn’t mean we should forget those that gave their lives that day – I doubt any of us will ever be able to forget the sacrifices made by so many to save so few.
For a short period of time the people in this country came together as a country, we were no longer black or white, Republican v. Democrat, immigrant v. non-immigrant, or rich v. poor. For a short period of time we were once again Americans, giving our all to save our fellow man.
If you look at the billboard for Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close it says “This is not a story about September 11, it’s about every day after.”
That’s true, it’s not a story about 9/11, it’s a story about the days after and there are very few references to 9/11, but the movie has the ability to take you back to that day emotionally, without taking you back physically, aside from brief flashbacks. This movie has a story within a story and everything about the movie is very tastefully written, acted and filmed.
After I saw the movie I read the reviews. I generally don’t read reviews before I see a film because nine out of ten times, I disagree. This is no exception. The movie has a positive rating of 62.2% after 47 press reviews and it seems to me that number is far too low.
Some members of the press say the movie is exploitive, some say it’s too soon for a movie about 9/11, others call it phony, and one reviewer even called it annoying and infuriating.
We cannot continue to walk on eggshells when it comes to 9/11. For the first time in our history we were attacked, by foreigners, on our own soil and there is nothing that we can say or do to sweep that fact under the rug. It happened.
Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close should be a reminder to all of us that the families of 9/11 victims are still out there suffering their loss and trying to find closure. If anyone should be giving a review of the movie, it should be the families of the victims and the first responders.
They were there before and after 9/11, most movie critics weren’t.
